Control-Oriented Modeling for Managed Pressure Drilling Automation Using Model Order Reduction

Automation of managed pressure drilling (MPD) enables fast and accurate control in operations. The performance that can be achieved by automated MPD is determined by, first, the controller design and, second, hydraulics model used as a basis for design. On one hand, such should able to accurately capture essential flow dynamics, example, wave propagation effects, which typically complex models are needed. other suitable simple enough allow extensive simulation studies supporting scenario analysis high-performance well. In this paper, we develop order reduction approach derivation control-oriented single-phase particular, nonlinear procedure presented preserves key system properties stability provides guaranteed (accuracy) bounds on error. To demonstrate quality derived model, comparisons with field data both open-loop closed-loop simulation-based case presented.
